Comparison of Theme: Fifth Business and Rebel Angels

The novels, Fifth Business and The Rebel Angels by Robertson Davies, are ones with many complex themes and characters. But the similarities of some of them are very apparent. Knowledge seeking seems to be a recurring theme in both novels. Dunstable Ramsay in Fifth Business, and Maria Theotoky in The Rebel Angels are two similar characters on the lines of being one to value and seek wisdom. Their pursuit of knowledge greatly influences their relationships with others and their spiritual sides and acceptance of their roots. Through the knowledge of others, and through their dedicated pursuit of knowledge, they learn more about themselves, and learn to become stronger people.

Theotoky's and Ramsey's quest for knowledge encounter them with many figures that make impacts and bring changes to their lives. These figures are more often than not intellectuals, or people that are able to offer


The knowledge Ramsey and Theotky gained also greatly influenced their spiritual being and the acceptation of their roots. They are both different when it comes to spirituality; Ramsey; a believer of saints, magic and miracles and Theotoky; a skeptic about such things. But their pursuit for knowledge and the wisdom offered to them by their friends helped them form a basis to their beliefs. Ramsey and Theotky were both escapists - trying to run away from their past; Ramsey, from his life in Deptford, and Theotky from her Gypsy roots. But the people around them helped them realize that their past would always be a part of them, and that denying their roots would just mean denying themselves. Theotoky was ashamed of her Gypsy background and often tried to get away from it.
