Jones the Grocer and Not to be Used for Babies

The two poems I have chosen to write about are 'Jones the Grocer' by Herbert Williams an 'Not to be used for Babies' by Harry Webb. Welsh Poets write both of these poems. This essay will explore these poems in detail and identify similarities and differences between the two poems.

Jones the Grocer written by Herbert Williams is written in first person Narrative and is about a local tradesman. In the first line of the first stanza we are introduced to the owner of the shop and straight away are given the feeling of loneliness. We are shown this when the narrator writes

'...Jones the Grocer, we called him'

The word 'the' in Jones the grocer is very impersonal and doesn't convey friendship, this is how we are given the feeling of loneliness.

The second line of the first stanza tells us that Jones doesn't lead a very social life when the poet writes

'...A pale man, skilled in servility'

The word servility suggests that Jones has no self-respect and is irritatingly humble. Also this line gives us a sound of disapproval.

The third and fourth line tells us a bit about what Jones is like and what he looks like

'...His hands white and soft as the lard he stacked

And the big brass churn amidships shone in the sun

This tells us that Jones has no character and theirs nothing memorable about him.

A neighbour of innumerable uncles and cousins

I drove the chariot of the sun, I was Caesar, Ben Hur,

Arrogantly accepting the shoppers' homage'
