The Dwarf by Par Lagerkvist

In the story of The Dwarf, the character of the princess Teodora exhibits a major impact in the life of the story's protagonist, Piccoline, the dwarf. In the story, Piccoline exists as a servant to Prince Leone and Princess Teodora. Piccoline holds great admiration for his prince, and follows him everywhere he goes, obeying his every command. Towards the princess, however, he expresses hatred and resentment.

Princess Leone possesses many male lovers other than her prince, with whom she spends time very often. Everything she carries out with her lovers, she confides in Piccoline. Piccoline resents her very much for this. "When she calls me into her chamber and whisperingly confides her messages to me, hiding the love letters under my jerkin, then I shiver all over and the blood rushes to my head. But she notices nothing, she never gives a thought to the fact th


It seems as if the reason that Piccoline feels this way towards Teodora and her lovers is because deep down inside of him, Teodora represents everything that Piccoline desires but cannot admit, even to himself, to wanting. He hates her lovers because, in truth, he wishes to be her lover. He states that he hates her and all of her sexual aspects, but deep down he truly loves and genuinely desires her. Throughout the story, Piccoline declares that he is not capable of love, but later in the book, Piccoline looks back and reflects on his life, and admits that if he were to ever love a woman, he feels it would be her, although he isn't sure why.
