"her journey to Pulotu has no dawn." (p109) Pulotu is the

spirit world in Polynesian mythology. In 'The Mountains of

Ta'u' he draws on the famous legend of Maui: "like

spinning tops or Maui's endlessly / inventing mind." (p110)
