The world in which Huxley sets the novel is apparently very idealistic, in fact an utopia, and shows a society where everyone knows their place and sticks to it. This is because everyone in this world is programmed before birth to his or her place in society. Old age, sickness, war and fear of death have all been eliminated, however to have these advantages the world controller had to sacrifice aspects such as the love of nature, family life, literature, relationships and marriage. The aim of this society is contained within the world state motto, "Community, Identity, Stability". Anything that does not fit in or could interfere with these aims is then abolished.

This is why in Brave New World and also the world today, doing things such as country walks and hill walking are seen as almost abnormal, and are certainly not encouraged by the media as the don't involve spending money.

Eccentricity was condemned as a terrible thing in the novel, as is shown with the Savage. To day, it is just as bad. In my opinion, this shows a lack of stability in our society, if a bit of individuality can impose such a threat. Most of us do just get on with our lives, and don't really have the time to stop and question the policies of society. This is what has been intended, as we also have distractions from reality, which do entertain us, but do their job in keeping everyone under control. Society has no time for individuality, as this would just get in the way of our stability. When we are depressed or unhappy, we turn to alcohol, cannabis and sometimes medically prescribed drugs.

This again shows that emotions are completely shallow in order for society to remain stable. At the beginning, Bernard is lonely, insecure and isolated; he is trapped in a body of a lower caste and constantly feels that he is not given the respect that an Alpha deserves. However, Bernard shows himself to be a hypocrite when he uses John, the savage, to gain popularity and indulge in promiscuous sex. At this point, Helmholtz is unimpressed and no longer respects Bernard, and I believe that Huxley expects us to feel likewise.
