Anabolic steroids are natural male hormones that build up muscle mass and increase weight gain. Other team mates and even some coaches pressure and persuade their high school athletes to use steroids for higher levels of competition and to also induce strength. Professional athletes are role models and idols for these young athletes. "Teenagers looking up to those elite athletes whose muscles ripple with steroid-enhanced power, are picking up some dangerous training tips [...] (Manning)." Associated with steroids are many short and long term effects. Male users can experience increasing acne, balding, yellowing of skin and eyes, developing of breasts, and shrinking of their testicles (Goldburg). If a young boy is using steroids it may painfully enlarge his sex organs (Goldburg). Shrinking of breasts, changing of menstrual cycle, balding of hair, and deepening of the voice are effects women users experience (Goldburg). Liver damage, cancer or death are long term effects steroid abusers will encounter. These anabolic steroids are unfair, cause behavior changes, and are dangerous to the body and mind.
