The Pigman

Adolescence is a time for shaking off responsibility. Discuss with reference to the novel, other class materials and own information.

Adolescence is a time of growth and time to learn and make mistakes. It is also a time where responsibility, or lack of can be questioned. There are many heated discussions over whether adolescence is really a time to be equipping yourself for the responsibilities you'll later have to face in life, or rather if it is a time when responsibility should not even be thought of. His pranks include setting off "twenty-three bombs" and organising the "supercolossal fruit rolls" (p8). John basically is interested in having a fun time, not really thinking any further ahead than that. This is shown when he initiates a large social gathering at Mr Pignati's house while he is still in hospital, which shows his lack of consideration.

Being a teenager is about learning and growing, both which ready you for the pressures of the work force and later life. When you are an adolescent, you are considered mature enough for jobs, taxes, driving, movies and therefore, it is time that you accepted the responsibility for yourself and others around you. Jewish people recognise this in a celebration called a barmitsva/batmitsva. It is the moment when the teenager becomes
