Media Violence
Critically consider the view that the media might contribute to the development of aggressive behaviourThere has been an interest in the affects of violent media on the behaviour of children by psychologists. In 1993, Michael Medved published a book called 'Hollywood versus America' which triggered an increase in research. The book is about the film industry's 'obsession' with violence. Some actors then turned against violent movies and publicly showed their disgust of it. One of these was Sir Anthony Hopkins who won an oscar for playing the insane serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the film 'The Silence of the Lambs.' He told journalists in Cardiff, "Enough is enough. As an actor, I have some responsibility. We have seen some terrible things in Britain recently. It's a terrifying world we live in and I don't want to encourage that through my films." In experiments, children have copied violent acts that they have seen on TV. For example, in the 1960's a psychologist called Albert Bandura showed a video clip of someone acting aggressively to a bobo doll to some toddlers, and then put them in a room with a bobo doll. Some children were not exposed to the video clip, but the ones that were, acted more aggressively towa
The validity of this research has been doubted because of the society on the island. The community is close, so if anyone does anything anti-social, the whole community would know about it. This is different from other societies, so maybe these findings cannot be used on those. Violent media is watched by almost everyone, and it seems like it's being used just to 'dump the blame on' for children being anti-social. It's clear that media violence isn't the only reason for murderers. Before TV was even introduced, there were serial killers. A good example was Jack the Ripper, who was a serial killer in London. In 1888 he murdered quite a few people in a gory fashion. This was 60 years before TV was even introduced, so TV cannot be the only reason for people to act this way, although violent media does seem to influence some people in an anti-social way. These individuals could have been mentally unstable in the first place, so even without the exposure to violent media, they may of still become murderers eventually. In 1993, two ten-year-old boys abducted a two-year-old called James Bulger. They tortured the toddler, and then eventually killed him. They were quickly caught because of the extensive CCTV footage they were caught on. The young murderers were found to of watched a violent film called 'Child's Play 3' which is about a toy that attacks people and contains some gory scenes of violence. When sentencing the boys, the judge, Mr Justice Moorland made the following statement: "It is not for me to pass judgement on their upbringing, but I suspect that exposure to violent films, may, in part, be an explanation." This caused major media speculation about the violent films that corrupted the two children's minds, to perform such a barbaric act on a young toddler. This creates a v
