Adolph Hitler had a vision for Germany -- a vision that included only white, blonde-haired, blue-eyed people. Hitler needed to eliminate all Jews from the conqurered nations of Europe to perfect this. How did he carry this out? It started with hard labor camps and putting the Jewish into the Ghettoes. Hitler even had Jews wear the Star of David to define them as different and isolated. Then death camps began. A death camp is a concentration camp in which large numbers of prisoners are systematically killed. The renowned death camp Auschwitz was one of the most atrocious killing centers of the Holocaust, as recounted by Elie Wiesel and other survivors. In the Holocaust there were many other camps. Among them were Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Maidanek, Mauthausen, and Nordhausen. However, the main ones were Auschwitz, Auschwitz II (Birkenau), and Auschwitz III (Buna). One of the most well-known and largest German concentration camps was the Auschwitz-Birkenau facility, located in the town of Owiecium in upper Silesia, Poland. Auschwitz was the most extensive of some two-thousand Nazi concentration and forced-labor camps and the largest camp at which Jews were exterminated by means of poison gas. I
It is obvious that although Jews suffered at the various concentration camps, they particularly endured greater hard ships at Auschwitz. Auschwitz was unique, perhaps because so many were killed there. The handful of European Jews that survived can be considered miracles. Some are scared to talk about what happened to them. Others tell their stories. It is hard to believe that such a terrible thing could have happened just a short time ago, but remnants of this infamous camp still remain serving as a reminder of the reality to the tragic end of so many lives. Auschwitz can never be forgotten. In the third section of the Auschwitz complex, Buna, existed labor camps and factories in which Jews were forced to endure harsh working conditions in order to serve the war economy. It opened on May 31, 1942 as a series of forced labor camps where synthetic oil and rubber were produced. Those who were not gassed immediately were subject to all kinds of torture. Those who were judged as being physically capable were forced into back-breaking labor. Buna also had fish-breeding and experimental plant-growing facilties, along with an S.S. armaments factory. In the course of time, sub-camps were set up, and they too were included as part of Auschwitz III. A total of forty-five sub-camps were built. The camp situations were horrendous. They were filthy, disgusting places to live. The prisoners were rarely allowed to wash and stayed in the same clothes all the time. For these reasons, it was very hard to stay healthy. Lice and fleas brought disease like typhus and dysentery. Disease claimed thousands of lives at Auschwitz.
