The play starts in the bedroom of Betty Parris, who after her father found her in the woods dancing naked, is now sick an unable to move. A slight argument is pursues with another woman, as Reverend Parris is pushing the doctor to find a medicine for Betty's sickness. With the prospect of witchcraft looming over his head, he is desperate. Hysteria is starting to set in and now a woman is crying that the devil caused the death of her seven children. Owners of farms that were once there to tend to their land are no longer and the farm animals are all about in the city. People that are imprisoned are coming forward with their confessions with their association with the devil. The main part of this act is really about Goody Proctor trying to pursue her husband John Proctor to confess and go on with his life. When she was brought to the courtroom Mr. Hale along with the Deputy Governor Danforth and Judge Hathorne asked her to talk to her husband. She did talk to her husband, and with a grand effort, she convinced him to do so. He confessed, right to Mr. Hale. Once the confession was through, he was asked to sign a paper and then it went all down hill from there. He refused to sign the paper and then the deputy rescinded their offer to accept his confession. Then they sent him to the rope and hanged him.
