The Course of True Love Never Did Run SMooth

" The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth"

In love, many conflicts arise that cause major problems and difficulties in relationships. The main characters in William Shakespeare's play " A Midsummer Night's Dream" which takes place in Athens, Greece are: Lysander and Hermia, two lovers whose love is forbidden by Hermia's father , Egeus . Helena and Demetrius are another couple. Helena loves and stays faithful to Demetrius although he does not return her love until a spell is placed on him by the Fairy King Oberon. The last couple in the play is Oberon and Titania, two fairy lovers, which argue because Titania has possession of an Indian boy that Oberon wants. The main conflict starts when Lysander and Hermia run away to the magic forest. Their actions lead Helena and Demetrius to the forest and the two mortal couples are changed through spells and led into many conflicts and setbacks. There are three couples who encounter difficulties and obstacles in their pursuit of love: Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius , Oberon and Titania.

In Summary the three couples that embark on a journey and come across difficulties are: Lysander and Hermia, Helena and Demetrius, Oberon and Titania. Lysander and Hermia's major difficulties was having Theseus and Egeus approve of Demetrius and disapprove Lysander. Helena and Demetrius largest struggle was having Demetrius hate her. And finally, Oberon and Titania's conflict was that of when Oberon's jealousy of Titania because he wanted the little Indian Boy that she had possession of to be his servant. quotation above, Egeus has come to court complaining to Theseus, the duke of Athens. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius but Hermia wants to marry Lysander. Secondly, Hermia is giving the ultimatum by Theseus that she must either marry Demetrius, become a nun or die. To illustrate, Theseus says " Take time to pause and by the next new moon/ The sealing-day, betwixt my love and me/ For everlasting bond of fellowship/ Upon that day either prepare to die/ for disobedience to your father's will/ or else to wed Demetrius as he would . (1.1 83-88). In the quote above, Theseus gives Hermia three options. The three options Theseus gives her are: to die, become a nun or marry Demetrius. And this as well complicates things by Hermia loving Lysander and Lysander not returning her love. Thirdly, Lysander falls in love with Helena because Puck places the love potion on Lysander's eyes instead of Demetrius'. For example, Lysander says " And yours of Helena to me bequea
