Christian Views On Abortion
Human life is a serious subject. But there are still debates on when it begins. Does it begin at the moment of conception? Or maybe life begins when the heart starts pumping, or when the brain starts to think. Some will even say that life does not start until birth. So if life has not started yet, it is no crime to take the developing fetus out of a mother's womb and destroy it. Many people, their side being called pro-choice, agree with this idea, but there are still groups of people who disagree with it. This group, also called pro-life, thinks that life begins at conception or soon after. These two sides are always coming up with new ways to prove their opinion, but it often seems like a never ending war. There are many different ways that doctors perform abortions. These doctors must take note of how long the mother has been pregnant, and how much the baby has developed. The literal definition of abortion is, according to the Universal Standard Encyclopedia, "The expulsion from the womb of a human fetus before it is capable of independent life." In 1973, the Supreme Court decided to make abortions legal. Today, abortions can be performed at any stage of birth, including moments before birth. Before
People choosing to agree with abortion come in all types. There are those who think that it is okay to abort a baby no matter the circumstances. There are also those in favor of abortion who agree with some uses of it, but not all. For the most part, these people choose to think that as long as a fetus is not viable, it's okay to get rid of it. There are even some people who only agree with abortion to gain research. There are a few things that doctors and scientists can study about the human body only if a baby is aborted, but aborting a baby solely for research is illegal. Sometimes, doctors and/or scientists will try to convince women who are pregnant that they need an abortion, and will sometimes get other members of the family involved so that they can get their way. Trying to get someone's business is purely legal, but almost forcing someone to get an abortion is entirely illegal since the person would be doing something against their will. There are also Christians that argue in the name of abortion, that is, supporting it. These Christians do not take abortion lightly, and will listen to any argument presented to them when asked. Some of these people like to point out that God's plan would not be interfered with since the topics in the Bible only deal with special circumstances. They also say that some "pro-lifers" take scripture out of context just so that they can prove a point (also called "proof-texters"). This brings up instances like the 6th commandment, "You shall not kill," and when the point of viability is. So this argument is a never-ending one since you can keep on going in circles. Most Christians believe that from the moment of conception that the fetus is a living being, is viable, and has a soul. Therefore, if the mother should get an abortion she and the doctor are violating the 6th commandment of God, which is, "You shall not murder." (The Holy Bible NIV, Deuteronomy 5:17). Another significant argument against abortion frequently made is that if a woman knows that she can just get her baby aborted, that she will take up an irresponsible attitude toward reproduction. Having this kind of attitude is wrong, as God said that reproduction will be sacred. Strangely enough, the Bible never specifically talks about abortion, but there is one portion of scripture that seems to touch on the subject. Interestingly enough, abortions did happen in biblical times, and when Jesus was here on Earth. The reference is Exodus 21:22-25. 22"If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman's husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe." It talks about two men that are fighting and accidentally hit a pregnant mother. She gives premature birth. The Bible then tells us about the consequences that should take place if injuries occur. The major problem is that the passage does not say whether to
