A Universal Feeling

Have you ever waited in a queue at a bank to deposit 200,000 TL for a few pages of photocopy, after visiting the bank for a few times when you didn't have time to wait or waiting would be useless because they decided not to accept any payment after 11:30 a.m.? If your answer comes out to be positive, you know what made me frustrated and angry just a few days ago. Anger is one of the many emotions that all human beings experience from time to time, but should we show everyone that we are angry? According to my personal experiences and those that I've heard from others, I think that many of the generalizations researchers have made are true.

Jamie Talan, the author of "The Anger Factor", suggests that it's better to understand feelings and try to change what is bothering instead of increasing the risk of dying younger by getting angry every time the same thing happens. I agree that it is easier to try to prevent the situation that makes us angry or to stay away from it as much as we can instead of going over the same annoying experience again and again. Every time I go out with my father he is anxious about being late to wherever we are going. It used to make me angry to hear the same two words, "be quick", although we wouldn't be

In "The Great Catharsis Debate", Carlson and Hatfield report that angry people have a dual problem - first, they have to deal with their own emotions and then deal with whatever problems they are facing. I agree with this generalization, and that's why I try hard not to get angry easily. This way I don't have to consider the extra problem of dealing with my emotions because getting angry is a problem itself. Having a problem is already unpleasant enough, why add an another problem arising from our anger when we have the chance to control it? As the famous song goes (making the assumption that worrying is equivalent to getting angry): if you worry you'll make it double, don't worry, be happy!

Anger is the feeling we can't escape. It's not easy to become angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and in the right way, as Aristotle states. It's also not easy to decide either to show or to hide one's anger; or if showing anger will create catharsis or make things worse. Worst of all, even when the right action is decided on, it's quite hard to obey the decision. However human beings are supposed to deal with these difficulties in order to live a tranquil life. Research shows anger expressed usually increases anger making the situation harder to be solved.
