The movie Glory is about a story within a story. It is about a black regiment fighting for not only their country, but also respect. The movie is also about prejudice towards black people. Although the North was essentially fighting the war to abolish slavery they still did not see the blacks as equal.
When the black regiment was first formed the leaders had no intention of letting them fight. They were not going to get uniforms and were not equipped with proper foot ware. They were only used for manual labor. They also were going to be paid reduced wages.
The big turning point in the movie was when Col. Robert Gould Shaw informed his men that they were going to receive less pay because they were black. The character played by Denzel Washington was outraged. He said that he was "not going to take no slave wage". He tore them up. Others began to do the same. The movie portrays most of the black soldiers as former slaves. This is not true. Almost all of the soldiers had been free all of their lives.
In the movie Col. Robert Gould Shaw had to blackmail a union officer just to get his men the chance to fight. In real life he did not have to do that, but it shows how much the whites did not want the blacks to fight. It amazes me that their men were dieing on the battlefield by the thousands and they would not let these black soldiers risk their lives for their country.
Some might ask why the whites did not want the blacks to fight. The Union obviously need their help. Their men were dieing left and right.
