Overveiw of a Farewell to Arms by Earnest Hemingway

Write a character sketch of the character you feel is the most important to the book.

The character that I feel is the most important to the book is Catherine Barkley. She was a constant character in the novel. Hemingway uses Catherine as a hero. She is worldly but she is modest and truthful. Even though she dies she still is a principle character.

Hemingway attended public school in Oak Park. He would later portray his hometown in an unflattering light stories, for instance "Soldier's Home." After graduating from high school, he enlisted in a Red Cross ambulance corps stationed on the Austria from in Italy during the last year of WWI. He was wounded and sent to an American hospital in Milan where met and fell in love with a nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. This would inspire him to write the novel, A Farewell to Arms. After he was dismissed from the hospital, he returned to the United States to begin a career to support him and Agnes. He wanted to marry her but later found out that she had married someone else.
