Cross Generational Relationships in A Hero of Our Time and F

A detailed Summary of Cross Generational Relationships in A Hero of Our Time and F

Cross-generational relationships in both, A Hero of Our Time and Fathers and Sons show us that relationships with a generation gap are very problematical and many tribulations may arise from them. Nonetheless, cross-generational relationships can be very rewarding to both parties as both can learn countless meaningful and indispensable truths about them self. It has been said that you can learn more about yourself through the reactions and comments toward you from people around you. The relationship that will be analyzed from the novel, A Hero of Our Time, is the one of Pechorin and Maxim Maximnych. This relationship between Pechorin and Maximnych is known as a surrogate father-son relationship. This is a very appealing relationship as Pechorin has been sent to Maxim in the Caucuses. The cross-generational relationship that will be studied in Fathers and Sons is the one of Bazarov and Pavel. This is a very radical relationship as we bring in Nihilistic views.

From the authors preface of A Hero of Our Time the following was said: "A Hero of Our Time, my dear readers, is indeed a portrait, but not of one man. It is a portrait built up of all our generation's vices in full bloom." Pechorin and Maxim Maximnych came to be together wh

en Pechorin was sent to Maxim in the Caucasus. Pechorin and Maxim build a very strong relationship almost like a father and son would. The first instance where we see a bond forming between the two of them is the dispute over Pechorin's kidnapping of Bela. The following is a conversation between the two of them discussing the kidnapping of Bela. Maxim starts of by saying, "Ensign, you have committed an offence for which I too may have to answer" (Lermontov 38). "Well, why not? Have we not always shared everything equally?" says Pechorin in response. Maxim then sits on the bed and says to Pechorin: "Listen here, Grigory Alexandrovich, you'd best admit that it's wrong. That you kidnapped Bela. What a crook that Azamat is! Come now, admit it,' I said to him" (Lermontov 38). That argument was the first occurrence where we see Pechorin and Maxim have a father to son conversation. Maxim is shown here giving Pechorin advice on what to do. Nonetheless, we see Pechorin take on a typical son role by questioning the advice of Maxim; "What's wrong?" (Lermontov 38) says Pechorin when pondering what he has done wrong. They would soon be parted as both would go their own way as Bela had been killed in an accident with Kazbich; another man in love with her. After being separated for more than five years they would soon be reacquainted; except this time it would not be to the liking of Maxim Maximnych. They would be reunited in the city of Vladikavkaz. Pechorin was now living the life of a prince. He had a carriage fit for a king and he wined and dined with the rich. Maxim had known that Pechorin was in town but never had the pleasure of meeting his old friend as Pechorin was always out socializing. The day of Pechorin's departure was the day that Pechorin and Maxim would meet. "The horses were harnessed, the bell attached to the shaft bow tinkled, and the valet had already reported twice to Pechorin that the carriage was waiting. But still there was no sign of Maxim Maximnych. Luckily Pechorin was deep in thought...apparently in no hurry to be on his way. I crossed over to him. "If you would care to wait a while," I said, "you will have the pleasure of meeting an old friend..." (Lermontov
