Napoleon Bonaparte
On December 2, 1804 the sweet-talking, crowd-charming Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor of France. The Revolution just coming to a close, left mass chaos and disorder throughout the nation. The people no longer cared about the little freedom they had gained from the bloody revolution. They were willing to elect a monarch in order to calm the chaos-stricken country. They voted overwhelmingly in favor of Napoleon being crowned emperor 3,572, 329 to 2,569.It did not take long for the new ruler to begin acting the part of royalty. Soon after his election he even began signing documents with only his first initial as leaders of the past had. Napoleon began his rule in a way that shocked all who that attended the coronation. In order to show everyone that he was in no way under another's authority, he took the crown and placed it on his own head. This fairly short, arrogant-looking man was said to have a kind of air about him that demanded obedience and respect. The men that served closest to him claimed he had a fire in his deep-set eyes. He was a child of luck, as some would say. He was always at the right spot in the right time. In ten years, he grew from a mere soldier to the emperor. Along the way his
The attack went as the czar had planned. The French followed the army deep into Russia, destroying everything as they went along. Finally, at Moscow the Russians stood their ground. They were defeated but heavily wounded the French forces. When Moscow caught on fire and nearly burned to the ground, it left Napoleon exposed. With winter coming on, the French began their retreat. Since they had ransacked the very cities they were returning through, the French were low on food. The cold began to set in. On top of all this, the Russians were sniping them and sending skilled horsemen on hit-and-run raids. Napoleon fled back to France with an army of 20,000. Napoleon would not be quieted though. He began scheming his final thrust at ultimate power. The people of France began to miss the excitement Napoleon brought. On March 1, 1815, Napoleon landed near Cannes on the French coastline. With 1,100 men he marched on Paris. As he went, troops rallied about him. On March 20, they arrived in Paris and forced Louis off the throne. Napoleon was emperor once more. Napoleon returned to France and wrote his abdication. He tried to name his son as his successor, but this request was ignored. Napoleon had to get the English fleet busy in order to cross the channel. To do this he got a fleet of 33 ships to create a diversion so the French men-carrying ships could cross safely. The plan failed; however, when the English fleet, consisting of 27 ships, under the command of Horatio Nelson, quickly destroyed the band of ships and thus changed history by keeping Napoleon Bonaparte's armies out of England. With his plans of ever defeating England on her main land destroyed, Napoleon went back to fighting with the countries in England's coalition until she would eventually stand by her self. Seeing this relaxation of limitations, Russia became indignant that France expected Russia to continue banning English imports. Russia began allowing English imports and thus its alliance with France. And so the two countries prepared for war.
