Symbolism

Conrad incorporates a lot of symbolism in his novella The Heart of Darkness. Every single character or object could be analyzed and portrayed as an important symbol in the book. Conrad includes many distinct symbols in this novella in order to emphasize the dark and mysterious plot. The Oil painting that Kurtz has painted has a very significant meaning behind each and every detail. The jungle enhances the feeling of bewilderment and anxiety in the minds of the readers. The river completes the overall picture by adding its snakelike qualities. Although this novella could be told without including these symbols, it wouldn't have been very effective in capturing the reader's interest. Symbols are put into books to aid in the development of the theme and to entice the reader's feelings and emotions. The details and descriptions that symbolism brings to a book conveys different aspects of the book in different lighting.

The jungle serves as a barrier for all wondering eyes. The massive area of trees creates the sense of mystery because there is a feeling of unknown. The trees cover everything up, and a secret is hidden behind every trunk and leaf. Marlow conveys his amazement of the "high stillness of the primeval forest bef

The river separated the two distinct societies from coinciding with each other. This river symbolizes the vast differences between the African and the European cultures. The river flows towards civilization "You lost your way on the river as you would in a desert, and butted all day long against shoals, trying to find the channel, till you thought yourself bewitched and cut off forever from everything you had known once." Conrad also describes the river as an uncoiled snake. This gives the readers a feeling of mystery and anticipation for what the river has in store for the travelers. "But there was in it one river especially, a mighty big river, that you could see on the map, resembling an immense snake uncoiled, this its head in the sea, its body at rest curving afar over a vast country, and its tail lost in the depths of the land." Conrad is symbolizing the strength an evilness of the river. Using a snake as a symbol cannot result in a good outcome. Snakes are usually perceived a swift, mischievous creature that feeds off the innocent rodents. The snake slowly creeps closer and closer to its prey until it has devoured it whole. The river is also stalking its prey. It is bringing Marlow and the rest of the crew further and further into the forest until there is no turning back. The snake also foreshadows the dangers that Marlow will encounter in Africa.

ore my [Marlow's] eyes". The darkness that lies behind the cluster of trees gives the excitement to the novella because there
