Sam The Sudden

A detailed Summary of Sam The Sudden

By examining the novel 'Sam the Sudden' we can see how P.G Wodehouse uses interesting and unusual word choice to develop a novel that has a strong effect on the reader.

The novel is about Sam, who moves from New York to England to get a new job, with Mr Wrenn, working for a newspaper.

We can see an example of unusual word choice in the first paragraph where New York is described.

"...New York, stewing in the rays of a late August sun..."

The word 'stewing' is unusual but gives us the impression of the city heating up slowly over the day. A stew is thick and almost solid and here the air is almost solid as well as if restricting the people. It's as if the heat is suffocating.

Wodehouse uses this to give the description a stifling, negative feel. This is the day when Sam leaves New York and perhaps Wodehouse is suggesting the city isn't the place for Sam.

Later on in the novel we can see more interesting word choice when Wodehouse describes a semidetached house.

"...being joined, like a stucco Siamese Twin, in indissoluble union..."

'Stucco' is an unusual word because of it's meaning. It is a type of plaster used to waterproof houses. The houses look like someone has tried to make them look the same but it hasn

For me one of the most interesting word choices that Wodehouse uses is when describing Sam's laugh

This gives us a good picture of Sam having quite an evil laugh. It seems like quite an open laugh because of 'in it's native jungle'. Sam is not ashamed of it.

It suggests that the houses have been together forever. It makes them stand out more from the rest of the street. It is like they're sharing a part of each other, leaning on each other. The description of the houses represent the relationship the two neighbours - Sam and Mr Wrenn -have. Sam used Mr Wrenn's money to buy the house so we see their lives are interweaving like the houses and Sam relies on Mr Wrenn for income, Mr Wrenn supports him like the houses support each other.
