Most forms of capital punishment were abolished in the 1800's. In 1972 the Supreme Court banned the death penalty because it was cruel and unusual punishment in the violation of the 8th and 14th amendments to the Constitution. In 1976 after a serial killer's case the death penalty was required only for certain crimes. Now these days many countries have abolished capital punishment but the United States has not. In the United States there is thirty-seven states that have some type of capital punishment and thirteen states that do not have capital punishment.
