Values - where are we going, where are we now
Values - Where Have We Been and Where Are We Going? When you think of your values, what do you think of? I think of my family, God, work ethic, and friends. Values are and have always been a very important part of society. They have changed with the times, and even returned with the times. While I believe that the way some values need change, others are changing although I see no reason for them to change. One of the most important values we have ever had is that of family. We have seen this value change in many ways. In the past there were families that we would call true families. The "perfect" family was seen a lot. In this perfect family both parents were still married. The father would work, while the mother stayed home to take care of the kids. You would normally have the 2.5 kids, and a dog. You saw this in the T.V. shows of the past. Some examples of these are "Leave it to Beaver" and "Andy Griffith". Both of these shows stressed the values of the family of the past. Today, the family has changed dramatically. This value is not as important as it was in the past. You will not normally see the "perfect" family. You see many parents getting divorced and the single parent families. You may have
Material Comfort has also changed greatly from the past to today's society. In the past your material comfort was your family, morals, and values. Today, this would be how big your house is, how much money you make, or how expensive of a car you drive. Money is more important than ever. If you were poor you are usually not an important member of society. We are measured by money, the kind of neighborhood you come from, and the job we have. I believe that this value will stay in this direction. Progress is a very dominant value that started in the past, and has traveled through time. We tend to look forward to the future, rather than backwards to the past. We always want to be the best and first at everything. We have and always will have this mentality. In the past we have seen things such as the space race and the atomic bomb. We are still seeing this mentality in many things. People today are very competitive, they always want to be the first and best at everything they do. This is the basis of our economy and a very good thing. Without competition and progress you would not have to choose anything. The clothes you buy would all be from the same store, the brand and make of cars would all be the same. I believe that progress is a value that will never change; it will still be there always. Science has changed in more ways than I believe anyone would have ever predicted. I believe that in the past science was not as big of a value because the technology wasn't there. The science of medicine is probably the most important science we have today. Without the medicines of today more and more people would die of things such as colds and the flu. We believe in the medicines and doctors to keep us healthy and living. I believe that values will always be a very important part of our lives. I also believe that the places where we learn our values from will not change. We will still get our values mainly from our parents, grandparents, and other family. We will get even more values from school, church, and our friends. I believe that more and more values will be passed to us by music, television shows, and movies. We will also continue to teach our values to people. We teach ou
