School Shootings and SSRI's

It seems like there is always a trend in unimaginably horrible acts of violence that is trendy at a certain point in time. What was it a while back? Postal workers? It was almost trendy to work at the post office and... well... go postal, killing as many people as you could before running out of ammo or being stopped. What else was there? Drive-by's were pretty popular for a while there. And now a days? What is it? Is it cool to be a disgruntled teenager who cannot deal with the pressure of growing up and therefore feels the need to not only kill himself but also to take classmates with him? It seems like every few months it happens again and is reported by the media so cliched and so unemotional that the viewers find it hard to distinguish between shootings. The main reason that school shootings cannot be predicted is because there is no pattern of previous behavior leading up to the incident. Only one characteristic has been evident in every school shooting to date. The shooters have all been boys.

Obviously there is a problem here. There are a growing number of these school shootings occurring each year so people want to diagnose the problem. But who can say what the problem is? Is it loose enforcement of gun

Eric Harris was the leader of the trench coat mafia and was obsessed with war. Eric wanted to fight in a war. The stories he wrote and the games he played were about war; he lived out his war fantasies in role-playing video games, like Duke Nukem and Doom like so many adolescent boys, where the basic goal is to kill as many people or demons as you can. Eric wanted to be a marine most of all. But he was rejected because of a drug he was prescribed called Luvox (Bowana). Eric's dreams of war and being a marine were crushed, apparently a blow so terrible that he went over the edge. Since he would never see a war on foreign soil, he created a war on his home turf.

control laws that allows children to fall into guns so easily that they cannot pass up the opportunity to open fire on those they have grievances with? That is basically saying that kids today are inherently evil and so the solution is to get rid of the children, bringing an end to the human race. That does not seem logical. Most officials try to solve the problem of school shootings by increasing security, which more often than not means the installation of metal detectors (Rappoport). The problem with that is anyone who goes to the school with the intent of killing will not need much time to do so. By the time police or some one of authority arrives on the scene the deed is done. Also, as has been reported by former school shooters, there would be no way to keep a determined mind from possessing a gun and using it if he wanted to use it bad enough (Bowana), so there is most likely another underlying cause behind these shootings, someone just needs to find it. Recent studies may have done just that.

With no attempt at weaning the patient off the medication serious side effects occur. Overwhelming depression, terrible insomnia, and fatigue are the immediate side effects that can lead to psychosis and violent outbursts. This sounds just like a recipe for a violent attack on a school when the directions are followed by a child.

Sixteen-year-old Ben Garris from Baltimore stabbed his guidance councilor to death. Fourteen-year-old Kristina Fetters from Des Moines stabbed her favorite great aunt to death (Let's Talk). Both of these violent acts were associated with antidepressants. It is apparent that more has to be found out about the effect of antidepressants on children, but how many more children's lives have to be ruined before something is done about the over prescription of antidepressants?

People tend to believe that there is something about the way these kids are brought up or the environment that they are raised in that makes them into killers. If that were true then the FBI would have a profile on the type of kid that becomes a school shooter. The honest to God truth is that there is no profile on school shooters because contrary to popular belief they do not all wear black cloth
