Lockwood is not a reliable narrator for a few reasons. He misinterprets things often, he’s quick to make assumptions, and he’s overly social, which makes people become unwilling to talk or listen to him for a long period of time, unless the person is his servant Nelly Dean. Although the last characteristic makes Lockwood the perfect person for Nelly to tell the story too, it does not make him a reliable narrator. Lockwood is the type of person that likes to be well informed about his surroundings. He enjoys other people’s company and does not like to live in an isolated society where people are unsocial. In the opening paragraph of the novel Lockwood explains that he would not be able to live in a place so removed from society, such as Thrushcross Grange, if he were still in England.
