Catholic upbringing

A detailed Summary of Catholic upbringing

The main character of James Joyce's short story, "Eveline", has a tough time in her life both home and at business. The story shows what happen to her family, why her life went bad, meeting Frank, and the fact that she couldn't go Buenos Ayres to be married with her lover, Frank. Building the biggest question, here is, "Why she couldn't go with Frank?" It is because Eveline's Catholic upbringing as a dutiful daughter makes impossible her hopes for a happy life.

She lives in Dublin, and she is Christian. Her father had friend who is preacher, and she also "prayed to God to direct her" . She was belonging to the Catholic society, but the society seemed not to treat her well. "In her new home, it wouldn't be like that. People would treat her with respect. Eveline's coworker, Ms. Gaven had an "edge on her" . Joyce also mentioned that Eveline's store would be "filled up with advertisement" if she went away with Frank. Her society was small, and if one member of the society goes wrong, everybody knows it. Eveline grew up in this Catholic society, and its characte

After her mother's death, Eveline "had hard work to keep the house together", and she was the only one who can do it. Her brother, Ernest dead, the other brother, Harry, "was nearly always somewhere in the country"for his church decorating business, and her father is violent and domineering. She has two younger sister or brother, but both of them are too young to support themselves. No one seemed to be able to take care of their family, but Eveline. Her mother might know that Eveline is the only one who can do it, and that is the reason why she chose Eveline to ask "to keep the home together as long as she could". Her mother's promise seemed to make so much pressure to Eveline. It was very hard work and a "wholly undesirable life". I don't think her mother expected that Eveline would have so hard time. Just before her mother die, Ernest was alive, and her father is not bad -she might thought he will work hard after her death. Her mother should expect that both Ernest and Harry would get job, and make money for their family. Her mother shouldn't have expected
