In the book Arranged Marriages, Divakaruni shows that other cultures have glorified vision of America, instead of seeing the harsh reality and problems that do exist. Through out the short stories Divakaruni has many examples of people from India coming to America with glorified images and ideas of what they will find. Only to find out the harsh reality that America isn't a glorious wonderland like they had imagined.
Proof of this glorified American image first appears in the short story Clothes. When Sumita mistakes the meaning of the phrase on a t-shirt that her husband secretly buys her. The advertisement says "Great America." It's an add for a local amusement park. But Sumita mistakes it for describing her new country that she considers to be some great mystical land. More proof of a glorified American vision is shown with her fascination with everything American. Also by her decision to stay in this country, in spite
Another prime example of a main character having a glorified vision of America and its culture is in the story A perfect life. In this story the main character thinks that she has the ideal "American life." She has a job, boyfriend, and a nice apartment. She thinks that all of those things combined make her have the ideal life and that there is nothing wrong in her American world. But when she finds a young boy that changes. From his condition Meera realizes that there is horrible unimaginable abuse happening in her great country. Her idea of a perfect American culture was changed. Especially after she sees what type of things that Krishna has been subjected to and also how ignorant he was to simple things, like going to the bathroom. Her ideal America vision changed even more when the issues of adoption came up. It almost seemed like she had lost faith in the country that she admired so much when the legal issues appeared.
