Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut

Slaughterhouse Five bu Kurt Vonnegut is more interesting for me to discuss all categories studied in the lecture. Ýt is one of the fantastic stories.

Slaughterhouse Five of Kurt Vonnegut is a very personal novel which draws Vonnegut's own experience in World War Two. He was a prisoner of war and a witness to the fire-bombing of Dresden. The novel narrates the life of Bill Pilgrim including his experince in the Second World War. The Dresden Slaughterhouse is a place where American prisoners are kept. Vonnegut manages to tell the reader many things and it is hard to decide,what exactly is the main theme. It is a novel about war, about the cruelty and violence done in war, about people and their nature, their selfishness, about love, humanity,motion and death.

The book has two narratives. One is personal and the other is impersonal. Ýt is impersonal as it is the story of Billy Pilgrim who fights in World War Two. He is taken as a prisoner by the Germans and witnesses the fire-storming of Dresden. The personal narrative is Vonnegut's own story about writing a book

The first theme of Slaughterhouse-Five is the war and its contrast with love, beauty, humanity, innocence. Slaughterhouse-Five manages to tell us that war is bad for us and that it would be better for us to love one another. To find the war's contrast with love is quite difficult, because the story doesn't talk about any couple that was separatted by the war. Billy didn't seem to love his fiancee very much, for example.

The first piece of information that is given about Billy is that he has "come unstuck in time" . With this sentence Vonnegut has turned time from the intangible to the tangible and so he is now able to use it to fit his own purposes. By using the word "unstuck", Vonnegut implies that Billy has now become free. Vonnegut moves Billy rapidly,having him experience a fragment of his life. By fragmenting Billy's life like this, Vonnegut is able to bring the events that comprise his life closer together.

An interesting contrast in Vonnegut's books is the one between men and women. Male characters are often engaging in fights and wars and females try to prevent them from it. The woman characters are often mentally strong, have strong will and are very humane and loving.

Flashbacks are used in this story. This shows Bil'y mental instability as he travels to a happier time in life rather than face reality. The most notable part of Vonnegut's character presentation is that he is not very specific with character descriptions and presentations to a situation. The characterization of Vonnegut's characters are neither dramatic or descriptive.
