A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole is a story about a man named Ignatius Reilly. He is a 30-year old man still living with his mother Irene who still treats him like his precious little baby. Ignatius is a lazy fat man with a college education who eats cakes and donuts all day. The story starts off with the author describing the setting and Ignatius. He is in the middle of town shopping with his mother. Ignatius goes off to buy a string for his lute while is mother, Irene goes to buy some cakes for his dear old son. Ignatius waits for his mother on the sidewalk after he is done buying his lute string. As he waits, a cop named Mancuso takes a look at him and thinks he looks like a suspicious character because he is dressed funny. Patrolman Mancuso wants to bring Ignatius in to the precinct but he starts this whole scene and gathers a crowd around them. And old man who is part of the crowd calls the policeman a communist


, which starts another scene. Finally, Ignatius' mother comes back and saves his son from the cop and they hide out in a bar. The bar that they entered is a strip club bar that serve drinks in dirty cups and at night, they have exotic dancers dancing. They stay there for a while so that all the mayhem outside would cease. Ignatius and his mother order some drinks and his mom listens to Ignatius babble on and on about his trip out of town. Although he's told this story many times, his mom puts up with it and hears it about five times in the bar. Ignatius doesn't care much for him mother even though she does so much for him. After Ignatius' mom drinks and lot, they leave and go to the car. Irene is a little drunk and does not see where she is driving so she runs into the side of a building.

So it is that Ignatius grudgingly begins a series of jobs that suck him deeper into the underbelly of New Orleans. His work at Levy Pants as a file clerk does not work out. Hi
