ROMEO AND JULIET

A detailed Summary of ROMEO AND JULIET

In this assignment I will be discussing to what extent the behaviour of the adults, Friar Lawrence, Nurse (Juliet's) and Juliet's parents, Capulet and Lady Capulet should be held accountable for their lack of judgement, inappropriate actions which leads to death, because they let the lovers down. Romeo and Juliet are often referred to as victims of fate, "Star crossed lovers". The main problem for Romeo and Juliet is that they come from families that are constantly feuding with each other. Romeo is a Montague and Juliet is a Capulet.

One lady, who was close to the Capulets' but even more close to Juliet, was Juliet's Nurse. She had formed a special relationship with Juliet. She had become the main adult in Juliet's life, because she had been there since Juliet was a baby. She would have spent more time with Juliet than her mother would have, in those times.

The Nurse was aware of Romeo and Juliet's relationship. She makes sure that Juliet's Parents do not find out. The Nurse gets herself into a difficult situation. As she has a special relationship with Juliet, she does not want to spoil the relationship, by telling Juliet's Parents. At the same time she does not want to see Juliet unhappy. Whe

The final two adults are Lord and Lady Capulet, Juliet's parents. These are the two adults that are never aware of the relationship. It is hard to blame them for their actions, as they had no idea what was going on. Capulet offends Juliet by calling her "mistress minion". By calling her spoilt brat was wrong. However, this would be an acceptable remark, as Capulet did not know about his daughter's relationship, with Romeo. At the beginning Capulet comes across as quite a nice person and a protective father, "Let two more summers wither in their pride". Towards the middle he really wants Juliet to marry Paris, and this is where his anger comes out. However, towards the end he is the one to make the first move towards the Montagues "O brother Montague, give me thy hand". He has obviously seen that there is no point in fighting any longer. As for Lady Capulet, she seam's to be the one who agrees with everything Capulet says, "Talk not to me for I'll not speak a word". Lady Capulet has no special relationship or bond with Juliet. So in a way it was right for her to agree with Lord Capulet. I do not feel that Lady Capulet acts inappropriately. She is acting as the dutiful, obedient wife in keeping with the expectations of the time. It would be wrong to go against her husband, therefore, she agrees with him.

The Friar is another adult who becomes with the lovers' relationship. He is easily persuaded by Romeo, the Romeo does not love Rosaline but Juliet, "Her I love now...love for allow". When the Friar was asked to marry the lovers', he felt he was in power to undo the battle between the Montagues'and Capulets', "Turn your households". To some extent it is not possible to blame him for his actions. He obviously feels that it was his job t
