Down to the Wire
One warm Sunday night on the edge of town in Durant, Mississippi, the final game of the state soccer tournament to decide the best team in the state of Mississippi was about to be played. There was no humidity in the air. It was perfect soccer weather. Lining the field were parents and spectators from around the state to watch the game. Lights on the sides of the field showed the well-cut, deep green grass. The line markings on the field were freshly painted and clearly visible. The field looked fantastic. In the final game, the Tupelo Hit men would be facing the hometown Durant Assault for the championship. Both teams were very tired coming into the finals. They had both played a game Friday night, three games Saturday, and one earlier that day to make it to the finals. The Hit men were undefeated in the tournament when they started the game. The Assault had lost one game, but had enough points to advance out of their bracket to the semi-finals. One of the players for the Assault was Brian Sullivan. Brian was an average height young man of eighteen years with brown hair that came down to his eyes. He was a defender who loved to play the game. The fun factor and competitive nature of the game is what Brian
At this point the game that was intended to end around eight thirty had lasted until ten o' clock. As the first shot of sudden death, a Hit men player approached the ball and took his shot. It missed just a little left. If the Assault could score they would win. The player that had been chosen before the shootout started to take the first sudden death shot in the unlikely chance that it got that far was Brian. When he agreed to be the sixth man, he had no idea that he would actually have to shoot. It was his turn now. He did not know what to think or do. Shaun went up to Brian and said, "Aight, man, don't stress bout this shot. Just relax and shoot like ya know how. That other guy missed his, so if you miss we can still easily win. You got it as long as you don't tense up too much." "Man, I don't know bout this," Brian told him. "Just Relax," Shaun said again trying to reassure him. However, Brian's best friend and teammate Shaun Treyton was the best player on the team. He played center midfield and controlled the flow of the game. Shaun was also eighteen, but he was tall and muscular with somewhat short, blonde hair. Shaun liked the game for different reasons from Brian. He was in it because of his immense talent and was expected to play. Shaun also used soccer as a way to keep from getting fat. During a soccer game, players are constantly running which keeps them in great shape. To declare a winner, a shootout was needed. A shootout is where the ball is placed on a spot twelve yards from the center of the goal. The goalie stands on the goal line while a player from the opposing team shoots. Five players from each team shoot and whichever team has the most goals wins. Only players who were on the field at the end of the second overtime period are allowed to participate in the shootout. The players who were available to take part in the shootout gathered in the center circle, while the coaches named the five that would shoot. Five players from the Assault said that wanted to shoot. Shaun was one of those players. Brian decided that he did not want the pressure of having to take such a huge shot. Little did he know what was about to happen. Going into halftime the score was tied one to one. The teams went their sidelines during the break. Brittany walked over to where the Assault players were. "Great playing, Shaun. That was an amazing assist!" she exclaimed. "Thanks, couldn'ta done it without the passing of the rest of the team, and we wouldn'ta scored if it hadn'ta been for that great finish, Josh," explained Shaun. "So modest," said Brittany. "Could ya'll stop, please, we're tied. Let's focus on the game, score some more goals, and win this thing," Brian urged. "Yeah!" the team shouted in unison. Brittany kissed Shaun on the cheek for good luck and gave Brian an ugly look for his comment as she went to sit back in her seat. Before he left the center circle, Brian decided that he would look straight at the ground and never make eye contact with the goalie until after the ball was in the air. This was to prevent the goalie from getting any type of reading on which direction he intended to shoot the ball. His breath became very shallow as he grew increasingly nervous. As he walked toward the goal, he began to get a feeling of what prisoners on their way to be executed might feel like. The muscles in his throat tightened up and his mouth felt as dry as the Sahara Desert. It was about nine thirty at this time. Two overtime periods of ten minutes each were to be played to determine a champion. Both teams were very tired, but nobody showe
