Comparison of Chocolat and The Murder at the Vicarge
The books "Chocolat" by Joanne Harris and "The Murder at the Vicarage" by Agatha Christie are full of religious encounters. Some encounters are similar and some are different. For instance, the settings of both are very much influenced by religion as in they both partly take place in a religious facility. Also, the character's personalities are similar in that main characters in both stories are religious figures. Also the plots, even though the story lines are nowhere near similar, are both influenced by religious factors. In my opinion, the church is best represented in the book "Chocolat". That is how the stories "Chocolat" by Joanne Harris and "The Murder at the Vicarage" by Agatha Christie are influenced in a religious aspect. The first way that the stories are influenced by religion is the setting. At first glance the story "The Murder at the Vicarage" is obviously in a religious environment. A Vicarage is a house of a vicar, with a vicar being a member of the clergy who exercises a broad pastoral responsibility as the representative of a prelate according to Webster's online dictionary. The plots of these two books are different in theme, yet are similar in that both are involved in religion. The plot of "The Murder at the Vicarage" is a murder mystery in which a character named Colonel Protheroe is found dead in the vicar's study and the book is about the Reverend attempting to solve the mystery. The story "Chocolat" is about a woman named Vianne who starts a chocolate vendor business in a small town named Lansquenet and the book focuses on her experiences and encounters. The main adversary of Vianne is the preacher named Francis Reynaud. The way both are told is also similar; the entire book "The Murder at the Vicarage" is told in the point of view of the Reverend, and part of the book "Chocolat" is told through the Reynaud's eyes which brings the religious factor to light throughout both stories. While both books are written strictly for entertainment, they also bring truths about the church, such as the fact that all religious people are not perfect. Another fact that is represented is the fact that it's a misconception that all male preachers are gay, because both have either a wife or want a female partner. So evidently the plots are most different, yet it is evident how the religious view is given off in both books. Another way the two books can be compared in a religious aspect is in the characters' religious involvement or their lack thereof.
