Oedipus Essay

"It is inevitable as children grow up and test out their own powers- that there be some conflict of interests with their parents" (Miller 46). When children are growing up, it is impossible for them to avoid fights and disagreements. Also, children need to find out how far they can cross their boundaries without paying the consequences. Today, teenagers are set rules by their parents. Teenagers like to break these rules to see what will happen to them. Also, curfews are set and broken by teenagers. They try to see how late they can stay out without getting into a lot of trouble. Plus, disagreements occur every day between teenagers and their parents. Teenagers want to go to parties, while their parents do not want them to go. Even in today's world disagreements and arguments happen constantly. Like our world today, Oedipus had the same problems as society's teenagers.

Oedipus taught many important lessons. Today's world can learn from these lessons. The times of Oedipus and today were different but have the same problems.

Jocasta was Oedipus' mother and wife. She knew this secret information and did not want Oedipus to know about it. She knew that if Oedipus found this out he would be devastated and doomed. Her only choice was to stop believing in the prophecy. This meant going against the Gods. The Gods were like a parent to everyone. They governed the way mankind lived. Jocasta tested her powers by disrespecting the prophecy. She told Oedipus that the prophecy was wrong and that it was all a fake. "Nothing can be clearly foreseen. The best way to live is by hit and miss, as best you can. Don't be afraid that you may marry your mother" (Sophocles 67). Jocasta completely disregared the Gods when she said "Don't be afraid that you may marry your mother," because that was a sin. She ove
