Medieval Romances

A medieval romance is when a hero undertakes a perilous journey in search of something of great value. It must model a chivalric hero, and teach a moral lesson. Two medieval romances are Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Le Morte Darthur, however,I think that Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the more perfect of the two.

The theme of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is shown by courtly love vs. chivalric code. The Green Knight sets up a plan to test Sir Gawain's courage and loyalty by having his lady try and seduce him for three days. The deal between Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was that whatever Sir Gawain received throughout the day from the lady, the Green Knight in return would receive them from Sir Gawain. Courtly love vs. chivalric code means that the theme represents a conflict between love for a woman and loyalty toward a lord. Sir Gawain gave the Green Knight everything that the lady had given him except for the green sash. It was given to him to remember the lady by and he was told that if he kept it, it would protect him. In order to stay protected from the Green Knight when he was going to get a blow to the head, he kept the green sash. "For the man who goes to battle in this green lace. As long as he

kept it looped around him, No man under Heaven can hurt him, whoever may try, For nothing on earth, however uncanny, can kill him." As a result, Sir Gawain was nicked in the neck by the two-bladed ax. She drove Sir Gawain to have no choice but to either take everything she offered or completely refuse her. The theme in Le Morte Darthur is solidarity vs. bondedness which is any one who is not a knight of the round table fighting one or all of the knights of the round table. King Arthur who is a knight of the round table fought Sir Mordred who is not. They fought over King Arthur's kingdom.

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the three symbols were blood, water, and the green sash. The green sash represented selfishness because when Sir Gawain received it from the lady, he had the option of keeping it in order to protect himself from harm, or remain loyal to the Green Knight and give it up. Blood symbolized redemption and was shown in the following quote: "And all the blood of his chest went up to his face, And he shrank away in shame from the man's gentle words." Water symbolizes rebirth. By the area where Sir Gawain was meeting the Green Knight, there was a creek that existed at the bottom of a waterfall and the water in it was bubbling like boiling water. In Le Morte Dart
