The Doors
James Douglas Morrison was born on December 8, 1943 in Melbourne, Florida. His father, George Stephen Morrison, was in the U.S. Navy and had just returned from duties in the Pacific. After Jim was born, his father left to go back to war. For the next three years, Jim spent his life with his mother, Clara, living with Steve Morrison's parents in Clearwater on the Gulf of Mexico (Sugarman 10). In 1946, a year after the war ended, Steve returned and was posted to Washington, D.C. for six months. Clara accompanied him along with Jim. From Washington, he was posted to Albuquerque in New Mexico. While in Albuquerque, Clara gave birth to another child, Anna, giving Jim a sister ("History" home.cai.net). While traveling by car with his parents on a road from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, Jim witnessed an event in which he would describe as "the most important moment in my life". They came upon an accident involving a truckload of Indians. Many were hurt badly (Sugarman 11). Jim always claimed that the spirit of an ancient Indian medicine man possessed him. Jim never forgot the tragedy. The accident haunted him for a long time after the event, although his father finally told him that it had never happened, that it had been a
Robby was immediately interested when John called him up and explained that he needed a guitarist. He had heard a lot about The Doors from John, who often spoke of their wild and crazy singer, Jim Morrison. Robby hit it off with the band right away. Krieger joined the band. The Doors were now complete (Sugarman 23). The band had ten albums, such as Strange Days, Waiting for the Sun, LA Woman, and Morrison Hotel. With those albums came many singles. "Break on Through", "Hello, I Love You", and "Riders on the Storm" are a few of them. Fans, especially girls, loved The Doors ("Albums." www.angelfire.com). The remaining three Doors tried to go on. They released two more albums without their lead singer. These are Other Voices in 1971 and Full Circle in 1972. Those albums were flops and no one came to their concerts (Sugarman 53). The Doors--now consisting of Jim, Ray, John, and the two men from Ray's old band--went to World Pacific studios to record their first demos. Within three hours they had recorded six tracks. The band left the studio with those roughly recorded tracks (Sugarman 18). Soon enough, though, a man came along who hired The Doors to play at his club, Whiskey A-Go-Go. They now had the reputation as the hottest band in town. The band was happy that people were finally noticing them (Sugarman 26).
