Historical Summary & Evaluation of Gone With the Wind
The movie is historical and romantic and it shows racist views of slavery through the portrayal of the black characters. However, it gives an outstanding view of the South. It is not only a good love flick but is also a great Civil War saga. The movie follows the life of a Southern woman Scarlett O'Hara who experiences wealth, poverty, the Civil War, and the reconstruction of the South. She must use courage to bare the war. Although it may seem like the Yankees were the good guys and the Confederates were the bad guys, the movie portrays the Yankees as horrible people who spoil the gentility of the Confederates. Gone with the Wind considers the dramatic changes that take place in the American South between the period of 1861 and 1873. Scarlett does the same upon the birth of her son. She does not discuss pregnancy and she cares very little for her son. When Scarlett travels to Atlanta, she sees a vibrant town teaming with people and productivity and see busy factories which must produce goods for the Confederacy. In reality, the factories in Atlanta are among the very few in the South. The factories in Atlanta supply the entire Confederate Army, a huge task for such a small city.
