Louis Pasteur
Louis Pasteur was born on December 27th, 1822 in a region of Jura, France. His parents were Jean Joseph Pasteur, a poorly educated tanner, and Jeanne Etiennette Roqui, an intelligent and kind-hearted lady. Growing up, Louis enjoyed playing with his younger sisters, Virginie and Josephine, and hearing his father's tales of Emperor Napoleon's wars. These stories were said to have stirred a strong patriotic passion in his heart that lasted until his death. As a little boy, Louis did not show any sign of a great-scientist-in-the-making. His interests lay mainly in drawing, which he was exceptionally good at. Louis' last major project was on rabies. One of his most memorable events was when he saved the life of a young boy who had been bitten by a rabid dog in 1885. The success of Louis' discovery paved the way for saving invaluable lives from the dreaded disease. In 1865, a disease that was destroying the silkworms threatened the silk industry in France. The French government commissioned Louis to solve the problem. Louis agreed and isolated the disease causing bacilli of two distinct diseases: Pebrine and Flacherie. He worked out techniques for improving hygiene in the silkworm nurseries and thus saved the silkworm industry from catastrophe. Meanwhile, Louis lost his father and two of his daughters. This caused him to have a cerebral hemorrhage, and at the age of forty-six Louis was left with a paralyzed arm and leg.
