Carolina Maria de Jesus faced many adversities while living in the favelas. She had to raise three children alone and without a job. She could not get a job because she was single and had children, so for money she collected paper and cans on the streets. She then sold these for pennies a day, enough to buy food for her children. De Jesus would make one hundred cruzeiros in a day's work of paper collection if she was lucky. That is the equivalent of twenty-five cents. No factories or households would hire a single mother of three, because it was too much of a burden. Favelados could not save up money well either, because they barely made enough to survive, let alone think of the future. Politically, Brazil's candidates for office would care a great deal about the favelados as far as votes were concerned, but once in office would forget about them. Therefore no legislation ever got passed that would benefit the favelados. It seemed as if people just wished they would disappear altogether.
