Apollo 13
"That's one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind." Apollo 11, the mission that landed two Americans on the surface of the moon, is amongst the most successful stories of the US. It was the crew, mission control, the ship, and the pressure of the race that allowed the US to reach its goal of a lunar landing. There were many aspects to look at when studying Apollo 11 such as the race with Russia in which it looked like we were losing, and the fact that some people have theories that the lunar landing did not take place, that it was all filmed in some Hollywood studio by the government. The crew of Apollo 11 was one of the most important aspects of Apollo 11. Neil A. Armstrong was born August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He always loved to design model planes as a child. He obtained his pilot license before the Korean War, and he ended up flying 78 combat missions. He now became the commander of the Apollo 11 mission. Neil believed the mission was a challenge to big to pass up. He says that" space is the frontier, and that is where I intend to go." He was in charge of the crew and was responsible for the mission's success or failure. Edwin "Buzz" E. Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jer
sey on January 20, 1930. He got his nickname from his baby sister who called him "buzzer instead of brother. Aldrin gradated third in his class, and like Neil, he flew many combat missions following high school. He then attended Massachusetts institute of Technology where he studies on how two vehicles find each other in space. In 1963 Aldrin becomes the first astronaut to have a PH D. He then became the lunar module pilot for the mission. His job was to fly the lunar module and lead the men to the lunar surface for a landing. Michael Collins was born in 1930 on October 31 in Rome, Italy. He earned his science degree from the US Military Academy. The launch of Apollo 11 took place on July 16, 1969; 09:32am EDT, at Kennedy Space center, FL. A few weeks earlier, our spy satellite had picked up and rocket ready for lift off in the Soviet Union. Later that week another picture came in depicting a black bunker, the rocket had blown up. Aldrin explains lift off as ear shattering. Collins compares it to a popular song, Shake, Rattle, and Roll'. When the crew reaches the moon, the mission is a success. Millions of people gathered around with their families and watched anxiously on their TVs as history was being made. The landing took place on the morning of July 20th 1969. Neil Armstrong was the first to set foot on the moon saying his famous quote, "That's one small step for man, and one giant leap for man kind." Aldrin described himself on the moon as buoyant and full of "goose pimples." NASA hired him in 1963. (Scholastic Inc. Apollo 11) He is to do the job of the com
