In order to be able to begin trade with another country one country must be able to get to the opposing country's land and over power their people and government. With these moves they were able to move in and try to get China to do what was needed to make the Portuguese land wealthier. During the 1500's the Portuguese were able to travel to Japan and try to take over their trade system also. Later, the British came to the Chinese land by way of ship. They set up a port during the late 1600's in Guangzhou. Then begin to work their way up the Chinese ladder of government.
