The Crucible Act 1
A. The opening argument between Parris and Abby1. The basic concern under discussion in this scene is Betty's health. In this scene Reverend Parris and Abigail discuss Betty's condition and how Parris saw Abigail, Tituba, and the other girls dancing in the forest. 2. This scene helped the story that was being developed by showing me that there were suspicions that were aroused and that Parris had reason to believe that the girls were involved in witchcraft. 3. This scene helped me understand the characters by explaining what this time was like, and how people acted and reacted. The character whose personality was most clearly revealed was Parris', because he was very emotional in this scene. Parris is kind of a lonely man who usually suspects other people of trying to undermine his reputation or taint his name. He showed this with his actions when he harshly questioned Abigail and when he said that he would rather not let the public find out about witchcraft under his roof. 4. I think that Miller was trying to communicate that Parris was a kind of paranoid man, and that would serve as one of the reasons why he accused so many people.
1. The basic concern under discussion in this scene is how Betty's ailment and Ruth's ailment is connected, and what are the possible causes of their ailments. In this scene Mrs. Ann Putnam and Reverend Samuel Parris talk about Betty and Ruth's ailments and their similarities and differences. 1. The basic concern under discussion in this scene is Betty's reaction to the psalm that the congregation was reciting outside. The characters that were most involved in the scene were John Proctor, Giles, Rebecca Nurse, Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, and Parris. 2. This scene helped me to understand the story by showing how the feverish witch-hunt began, and who started it. 4. I think that in this scene Miller was trying to develop the relationships and boundaries between the characters, and show more clearly the personalities of the characters. 4. I think that in this scene, Miller was trying to show that people were willing to accept witchcraft as a scapegoat to most of their unexplainable problems, and that this was partly the reason why the Salem Witch Trials elevated to the level of severity and intensity that it did. 3. This scene helped me to understand the characters and their personalities in this play through what lies they made up, how easily they agreed with Reverend Hale, and how desperate they were. The characters whose personalities were most clearly revealed were Reverend Hale with his eagerness to prove himself and drive out the Devil and fine the witch, and Abigail with her quick lies and twisted truths.
