Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt was a fighter. "If it were righteous, he fought for it; if it was evil, he hurled the full weight of his personality against it. He never capitulated, never sidestepped, never fought foul. He carried the fight to the enemy" (Howland, pg. 1). Although Roosevelt was well known for his involvement in many political issues, he was most famous for his fight for his own physical wellness, his participation in the Spanish-American War, and his role as mediator in the Russo-Japan War, which won him the nobel peace price. Born in New York City in 1858, Theodore Roosevelt's first fight was for his health. During his childhood, he was in such bad health that it was doubtful that he would ever grow to manhood. He vigorously fought to physically strengthen his weak, thin body through to his years at Harvard. He endured many physical workouts and he enjoyed boxing. Roosevelt continued to box even after he became President in 1901.
After heavy fighting by the Rough Riders at El Caney and San Juan Hill, the Spanish surrendered and the war was over. The United States emerged from the war with new international power and Roosevelt won his popular reputation. Upon his return from the war, Roosevelt's popularity won him the position as Governor of New York. In 1900, he became Vice President under President William McKinley, and became President a few months later due to the assassination of McKinley. During his Presidential term, Roosevelt's efforts in the settlement of the Russo-Japanese War earned him the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize. The war resulted due to Russian expansion in the eastern Asia ran contrary to Japan's plan to gain a foothold on the Asiatic mainland. Even before the war broke out, Roosevelt suggested mediation for a compromise agreement; However, neither Russia or Japan was convinced, at the time, that a complete victory was impossible.
