Macbeth
For this piece of coursework I am going to compare how two video versions of Macbeth, the Roman Polanski and the BBC version, captured the full impact of the banquet scene from the original play. After watching the two films, I found they varied greatly in many ways, in how the characters were portrayed, which methods worked best and how the script was followed. After watching the BBC version, I thought the script was long drawn out like the play, word for word making lines last longer, and because of this I found myself not really concentrating on what was being said, whereas the Polanski version, which had a much more realistic set, had me captivated. The lines were shorter and I think a lot more feeling went in to what was being said, especially by Jon Finch who played Macbeth and who showed a horrified and terrified look, when he saw the ghost of Banquo. I found that the set of both plays made a big impression on me. The realism of the set was very important because it helped me believe the characters who were involved in that particular scene. At the start of the Polanski version there was a quick showing of how the lords were being entertained by a fight between a large bear and a dog that had to fight
After watching both plays, I have found like the murderers, the character of Lennox varied in both. In the text and the BBC version Gawn Grainger who played Lennox, did not have a very big part to play at the banquet scene. Instead he sat around the table with the rest of the lords, staring on in disbelief of the behaviour of Macbeth and he seemed as shocked as everyone else. It was quite evident that Lennox who was played by John Stride in the Polanski version was involved in the murder of both Banquo and the murderers. I as a viewer know he was involved in the murder of the murderers as he gave a conniving nod to Macbeth at the banquet to tell him he had dealt with them and had got rid of them. During class time members of my class and I, experimented with this scene, by acting it out ourselves. We analysed it and translated it into modern day English that I think worked very well. We went into great depth by looking at every characters line, which I think helped me understand the scene more.
