Glass Menagerie
In the play The Glass Menagerie, author Tennessee Williams expresses his feelings about life during The Great Depression and how it had an effect on some people. In this play, Tennessee uses different symbols to represent the characters' emotions and beliefs. There are many symbols used in this play, but the three main ones that I picked are the fire escape, the picture of their father hanging on the wall, and the unicorn in Laura's glass menagerie. Symbolism plays a great role in this play because it helps you understand the characters and the changes that they are all going through. The symbol that I am going to start out with is the fire escape, which is emphasized the most in the first few paragraphs of the play. The first symbol that I am going to explain is the fire escape in the back of the Wingfields' home. Although the fire escape is not usually thought of as a symbol, it is an excellent choice in this play. The fire escape shows how hard living back then was for some people. It shows how beat up the Wingfield apartment is, the only reason they use the fire escape is beca
use they cannot use the front door. I think that the fire escape relates to the characters because it symbolizes their way of life where they cannot take the easy way, the front door, but they have to take the hard way, the fire escape. Another way that the fire escape is used in the play is when Laura slips on her way out to the store, this shows how Laura is not used to the world outside of her home. This is why I think that the fire escape is a symbol that was used great in this story. The second symbol that I chose to describe is the picture of Mr. Wingfield hanging on the wall. This picture is one of the main symbols in the play because it shows how the Wingfields have to take care of themselves after their father left. This picture also symbolizes Tom becoming the man of the house, something that I think he is not up to yet. Mr. Wingfield left his family because he fell in love with long distances, I think that this is very similar to Tom because if Tom has a chance to get away from home, he will take it. I think that using Mr. Wingfield's picture as a symbol for Tom was a great
