Human Nature

Human Nature: The Savage Within Us

If you compare Mother Theresa and Jeffrey Dahmer, it's difficult to believe that they are the same species. But which of them is an example of the human race in its purest form? Are humans inherently good or evil? With such a broad spectrum of examples, this is quite a perplexing question. However, if you look carefully at our culture in previous civilizations and today, you will find it obvious that humans are uncivilized at heart. Up until one hundred and fifty years ago, blacks and other minorities were enslaved, and lived and worked in the most disgusting and terrifying conditions. Look around today, when every day people brutally murder and rape each other for absolutely no reason. Finally, look at the hundreds of wars that have taken place since the dawn of humanity. Many of these wars were sparked by things as insignificant as a difference of religion or a dispute over a piece of land. After reviewing just these few examples, it is easy to see that humans are born uncivilized.

The history of slavery in the U.S. is proof enough that humans are basically bad. Throughout history, until roughly one hundred and fifty years ago, humans enslaved other humans

Ever since the first man or woman set foot on earth, their primal instinct has been survival, not doing what is right or helping others. Unfortunately, humans are the same way today, and it seems every day you hear of a more deranged criminal. With such clear examples of savagery in the world- slavery, mass murderers, wars- humans being innately good just are not a possibility.

Every single day in our country, people are raped, assaulted, murdered, and domestically abused. Our jails are packed with people convicted of absolutely hideous crimes. Jeffrey Dahmer for example, was convicted of killing at least thirty people and linked to at least ten more murders. Bodies were found buried in his back yard and chopped up in his freezer. In another case, Susan Smith, a mother of two, drowned her children because her boyfriend didn't want them. It is absolutely inconceivable for the perpetrators of such grisly crimes to be basically good people. If humans were naturally good, the crime rate would be far lower and the number of serial murderers and rapists would be a fraction of what it is right now. Criminals are not the only individuals in our society that are savage. Even good, law abiding citizens in our country are obsessed with violence. Turn in the television, and you're sure to see a few fist-fights and shootouts. Check out the hottest new video game, and you may be surprised at how graphically gory it is. Go see the newest blockbuster, and I'll bet you there are more than a couple of violent parts in it. The people who write these programs are marketing them to the ave
