Beouwulf and the Warrior Code
In Seamus Heaney's Beowulf: A New Verse Translation, the idea of ethics is a reoccurring theme. In this Anglo-Saxon poem, that set of ethics is called the warrior code. In Beowulf the warrior code is a set of battle ethics. In the essay that follows, the warrior code will be addressed in three different ways. The first being how foreshadowing showed the warrior code's responsibility for the decay of feudal society, the second being how the code affected Beowulf, and the third being Beowulf's agreement with the code. Beowulf's agreement with the warrior code is one of disagreement. Beowulf managed to rule the Geatland for fifty years without as much as a feud between clans. Although it is not mentioned, the reader can only assume that Beowulf felt the code was outlandish. Beowulf, although not clearly stated, believes that warrior code can not continue to exist. However, the poet does allude to this when he has Beowulf say, "never fomented quarrels, never / swore a lie" (Heaney 2738-2739). Beowulf feels that the code is only there to wipe out whole clans, like it did to his.
