The bigger blunder he makes, the luckier he is. The more luck he has, the more admiration he gets. He starts the first paragraph by describing the battle in short sentence (p. 277 lines 3-5) and then he builds up a longer sentence where he goes on to talk about Scoresby and how he makes his biggest blunder of them all (p. 277 lines 5-8). The end of this paragraph indicates that the climax is coming when the Reverend says, "this is the end at last." This builds up attention.
