I'm also going to look up my Senator's reactions to the Bush Administration's policy on Border security. I live in Tampa so one of my Senators is Bob Graham. He has already sponsored some bills in response to the attacks of September 11, that agree with the Bush Administration's new policies on homeland security. On an issue like this there really isn't much controversy on the security of our nation, except for what organizations should be responsible and where funding would come from.

Another statement made by President Bush in his State of the Union address about his budget proposal was, "My budget nearly doubles funding for a sustained strategy of homeland security, focused on four key areas: bioterrorism, emergency response, airport and border security, and improved intelligence. We will develop vaccines to fight anthrax and other deadly diseases. We'll increase funding to help states and communities train and equip our heroic police and firefighters. We will improve intelligence collection and sharing, expand patrols at our borders, strengthen the security of air travel, and use technology to track the arrivals and departures of visitors to the United States." A report issued by the White House titled, Securing The Homeland Strengthening The Nation, stated, "The President's Budget for 2003 - the Federal government's first post-September 11 budget - reflects his absolute commitment to achieving a more secure homeland. The FY 2003 Budget directs $37.7 billion to homeland security, up from $19.5 billion in 2002. This massive infusion of Federal resources reflects the priority the President has attached to the homeland security agenda." (http://www.whitehouse.gov/homeland/) With an increasement of $282 million to the Coast Guard which brings the overall budget for the coast guard to $2.9 million. So the Bush Administration is trying to get more money for the Coast Guard and they will most likely get it, along with a great increasement to border security because the security of our nation is also the security of our freedom, and that is priceless.

My Senator, Bob Graham agrees with the policies of the Bush Administration on the increases in spending for border security and the Coast Guard. He actually has sponsored a bill to assign Coast Guard personnel as sea marshals. The bill is Bill S.1214, SEC. 202 of the bill is titled, ASSIGNMENT OF COAST GUARD PERSONNEL AS SEA MARSHALS AND ENHANCED USE OF OTHER SECURITY PERSONNEL.
