Diabetes

Diabetes is a very well known disorder. Nearly sixteen million people in the United States alone, almost one out of every seventeen people, have diabetes. Diabetes is a serious illness, and there are about 1,800 new cases are being diagnosed each day. To completely understand diabetes, a person must first know how the body works with the disease and then determine which type of diabetes he/she has. There are three types of diabetes: Immune-mediated or Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and Gestational diabetes. There are many factors that play into the development of this disease and there is another common factor, stress that can affect a person's diabetic lifestyle dramatically.

Type 1 diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body uses food. AS stated earlier, to understand diabetes completely, one must first understand how the body works. During digestion, your body changes most of the foods you eat into glucose. Also during digestion, your body tells the pancreas to make important chemical called insulin. Insulin, like glucose enters your blood and travels to your cells. Glucose and insulin meet at your cells, where the insulin acts as a key unlocking the cells to let the glucose enter. Your ce

Type 2 diabetes is disease that also affects the way you body uses food. It is the most common type of diabetes and affects about 15 million Americans. Type 2 causes one's body to not make enough insulin or your body still makes insulin but cannot properly use it. Without enough insulin, your body cannot move blood sugar into the cells and sugar builds up in the bloodstream causing problems. No one knows the exact cause of type 2 diabetes, but it does run in families and usually takes another factor such as obesity to bring on the disease.

Diabetes is a serious illness. No one knows for sure how to cure it. Doctors don't even know the exact pin pointed reason that it is caused. There is however, plenty of hope. Whether a person has type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes, doctors keep finding better and better ways for people to take care of this problem.

Although it is not a tremendous long term effect difficulty managing stress can also take its toll on a diabetes patient. Stress can cause blood sugar levels to become extremely high and low. Stress can cause a person to become depressed, which can make him/her eat more. Stress can also keep a person from exercising properly to help maintain his/her blood sugar levels. It is extremely important that a person with diabetes manages his/her stress levels.

No one knows the exact cause of type 2 diabetes but it has been shown that it is more likely to occur in people who are over forty years of age, people that are overweight, and people that are African American, Hispanic American, or Native American.
