The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption begins with a sentencing trial. Andy (biblical for Andrew) is given two life sentences for the murder of his wife and her lover. He is sentenced to Shawshank Prison. When the bus arrives with the new prisoners all the inmates bet, in prison currency of cigarettes, on who would break down first. Red thought that Andy would be the first, he was disappointed and intrigued with Andy's stability. During processing the inmates are introduced to the Warden and he gives the rules to the facility. The Warden likes speaking about God's judgement, in the prison the Warden represents the devil. The Warden is talking to the new prisoners and he makes a comment that, "You are convicted felons, that's why they sent you to me"(good goes to Jesus Christ and evil goes to the devil). He then goes on to say, "Trust in the lord, but your ass belongs to me". The trust is represented by the soul and the ass is represented by the body. The Warden has appointed guards to protect the facility. The guards that are under the Warden are represented as the devils demons. The devil knows the bible as well as Jesus, he uses it against you by twisting the words. The Warden tells the prisone
Red finally after serving forty years gets paroled. Just like Brooks, Red finds the outside world lonely and strange. Red has one motivation, the promise to Andy. He finds the tree and in a box that was waiting for him was money and a letter inviting him to go to Mexico. The letter of hope read " Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. It never dies. I'm hoping this letter finds you and finds you well. Your friend Andy". Red's final words were how hope is the best thing in the world and tells us all the things he hopes for: Brooks is finally released form prison after fifty years. Brooks goes into the outside world and is scared. Brooks says it is to fast and lonely. Brooks thinks about breaking his parole so he can be sent back "home" to Shawshank, instead he takes his own life by hanging himself. Brooks hung himself in a hotel room after he carved "Brooks was here". Andy back in the library receives an annual contribution of books. In memory of Brooks the library is named after him. Among all the books Andy runs across a Mozart record. He locks himself in the Wardens office and over the loud speaker plays the record. As a result of playing the music he is sent to the "hole" for one month. Red tells us how the music lifted everybody's spirits and for the briefest of moments made the walls come down, every last man felt free. The prison walls represents hopelessness. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. Red is introduced as the middle man in the prison. "He has been known to locate things from time to time" for the prisoners. Red is surprised that Andy asked him to get a rock hammer. Andy tells Red that he likes to carve chess pieces out of the rocks. Red is reluctant in getting the rock hammer because of the pick ax description. Red laughs when Andy tells him how big the hammer actually is. After this meeting Andy and Red become very close friends, almost like brothers. Concerned for Andy, Red tells him to watch his back because the "sisters" want him. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. 'I hope I make it across the border.
