Sexuality in
"Sex" is a word that once made adults gasp and young children giggle. But in today's society, which is often described as desensitized, it has become a popular topic and is heavily exploited by the news and entertainment industries. Some may find this disturbing, but others like the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud would argue that it is quite natural to be interested in sex, as he believed that it plays a major role in all human behavior. As Aldous Huxley tried to develop a new society of the future in the novel Brave New World, he made sure to recognize the role sexuality would play in any population. Sexuality is clearly an important topic addressed in Brave New World, just as it is in modern culture today. The brave new world is a society based on free love. That is, indiscriminate lovemaking is considered to be a positive quality. In fact, Lenina's peers frown upon her long-term relationships (Baker 93). Enforcing these ideals further are the solidarity services, which parody a holy communion (Clareson 237). This involves a group sexual act called the orgy-porgy. As opposed wine or something traditionally used for holy rituals, a "loving cup of strawberry ice-cream soma... passed from hand to hand... with the form
ula, 'I drink to my annihilation,'" (Huxley 81). The drug soma is used in this world to keep people happy without any of the negative side effects linked with today's drugs. The orgy-porgy even involves a song that perverts a familiar nursery rhyme (Clareson 238). "Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun, kiss the girls and make them one. Boys at one with girls at peace; orgy-porgy gives release." (Huxley 84) This actively sexual lifestyle is taken on only by adults in this society, but by children as well. In the earlier part of the novel, readers find a situation where "...two children...[are] playing... a rudimentary sexual game." (Huxley 31) Children are even thought to be abnormal for not participating in these activities. A nurse describes a particular boy as being "...rather reluctant to join in the ordinary erotic play..." Her response to this is "...taking him to see the Assistant Superintendent of Psychology." (Huxley 32) So even a lack of sexual desire in children is thought to be strange by society in the novel. A direct comparison to modern society is the use of buzzwords in Brave New World. Nowadays, one might refer to an attractive person as hot or sexy. Analogous to this is the use of words like pneumatic to describe people with a certain preferable body-type in the brave new world. In various ways, sexuality seems to play an even greater role in Brave New World than it does in modern society. If people began practicing those things deemed acceptable in the brave new world here in the real world, they might be viewed in a very different manner. Group sex, such as the orgy-porgy, is already frowned upon by most individuals as it turns sex into more of a game than a meaningful expression of true love (Freud 134). People who sleep around in the real world will often become social outcasts, as that sort of behavior is unacceptable in modern society as opposed to the brave new world. The children of the brave new world, who are not only taught about sex at an early age but are even encouraged to actively participate, differ from modern people who are not taught about sex until they are mature enough to understand its value and mechanical processes, and not allowed to participate in it until they are legally adults (Baker 80). The savage reservation, on the other hand, is much more like modern American society. The rituals that readers see in the savage reservation seem to b e a blend of modern Christianity and the customs of various
