People might think that Hamilton and Burr are totally different but amazingly they were alike in many ways. Physically both were small men. They both had incisive eyes, with very persuasive voices. They both wore tremendously fashionable outfits for their time, made by the company dapper. They both were clever speakers when giving comments, mainly to the ladies. They both held a keen aspiration to lead their American troops to victory disregarding where the place was. Their personalities were similar in many ways, like their temper and desires. By 1971 Burr changed his business from law into politics. This caused many problems between Hamilton and Burr. General Philip Schuyler, Hamilton's father in-law, lost his Federalist seat to Burr. Hamilton himself was a Federalist. When Burr won the seat Hamilton lost a Federalist seat and a father in-law being upstaged. Hamilton's revenge came when he stopped upstate Federalists to nominate Burr for governor. These were one of the first signs of hatred between Hamilton and Burr.

Burr's career was coming to an end in 1804, and his chances for reelection were tiny, which left him with two choices. He gets out of politics and acknowledges his humiliation, or fight for the governorship in New York. He took the path to fight. Hamilton tried to aid Judge Morgan Lewis in beating Burr for governorship. Hamilton had succeeded once again and Burr lost on a three to two margin. Burr couldn't take anymore of this fighting so he just asked Hamilton to send a letter of apology to him. Burr waited for an apology but it never came, so he challenged Hamilton to a duel on June 27. Hamilton accepted the challenge.

Hamilton and Burr were not bitter enemies at this moment. In 1972 Burr declared that he would be a Democratic-Republican. This was very surprising because most of his friends were Federalists. This infuriated the Federalist Hamilton even more. After this Hamilton admits that he no longer respects Burr.
